New music ~ Scary Pockets with Lizzie McAlpine ~ great excuse to intro Scary Pockets who do a load of very cool funk arrangements of classic songs; in this case Grover Washington Jr’s Just The Two Of Us with the pure, stylish vocals of Lizzie McAlpine who I’ve put on here before (check out the little effortless run she drops in at 2.57…) Sat back groove from the ‘house band’ everyone would loooove to play in and what a song this is - real masterpiece.
Performance ~ Ariana Grande ~ It’s a bit of a reductive (dick) move to knock popsters for not writing their songs / getting auto-tuned / doing crap adverts etc so thought this was a good reminder of why Ariana Grande is where she is. She’s an INCREDIBLE singer.
Music geek stuff ~ The Tristan Chord ~ say what you want about Wagner but no four notes are as harmonically ambiguous, so reflect the fragile human condition and (uncommon for most music geekery) so imbued with tantric eroticism as the chord at the start of his Tristan and Isolde. Stephen Fry and Stephan Mickisch do a good job of explaining why.
